CLICK HERE to find out more about running a SAFER Referendum on your campus
Students at colleges and universities nationwide are demonstrating their opinion that school penalties for marijuana use should be NO greater than those for alcohol use. At several colleges, students have introduced, petitioned, campaigned for, and adopted SAFER Referendums. At others, student representatives have introduced and approved SAFER Resolutions through the student government.
Successful SAFER measures serve as catalysts for much-needed public debate about the relative safety of marijuana compared to alcohol and the potential harm of policies that steer students toward drinking.
They also lend to the establishment of broader campus movements. Students at some schools have established task forces consisting of administrators and students to develop policy changes that reflect the referendum. In some cases they plan to study the effects of such policy changes on the prevalence of alcohol use and -related problems among students.
News stories about SAFER measures have appeared in the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Washington Post, the Washington Times, the Dallas Morning News, and the Denver Post, among several others.
